Movie description:
Antonio, 15, lives with his mother in Manila; his father is working overseas – the fact that he sends money back home doesn’t console Antonio or his mother for his absence. Antonio has a circle of friends, and is gregarious by nature, though recently he has found himself attracted to one of his friends. A drunken fumbling between the two males one night leaves Antonio an outcast. The arrival of his 25 year old uncle, Jonbert, takes the edge of his disappointment.
Jonbert identifies as straight, but possesses an insatiable sensuality that doesn’t prevent him seeking his pleasures wherever he can find them. Tension grows between the two, as Antonio’s desire for Jobert reaches intensive proportions. Meanwhile Antonio’s mother, lonely herself, becomes increasingly impatient with Jonbert’s drinking and irresponsibility. The close family unit is heading for a series of dramatic climaxes.
»Ang Lihim Ni Antonio« is a superb portrayal of a young male’s desire and frustrations. The central characters are plausible and give tight performances; if some of the subsidiary characters are somewhat one-dimensional, this can easily be forgiven in this directional début from Jay Altarejos. An engaging, sensual film, filled with eroticism and yearning; you’ll undoubtedly want to watch this one several times over.
