Laure is moving into a new neighborhood with her little sister Jeanne. Because she is in need of new friends and does not know anybody, Laure decides to dress and act as a boy. She becomes close to Lisa, who does not know her new best friend is not a boy.
The French film »Tomboy« is a showcase of the excellent casting of children, The »tomboy« concerned is 10-year-old Laure. In terms of both her behaviour and her looks she has no difficulty in passing for a boy. This is Just what happens when she moves to a new neighbourhood and meets Lisa, also 10, to whom she introduces herself as »Mikael«. Lisa introduces her to the other children: a delightful, motley crew still accustomed to playing outdoors, »Mikael« deftly and swiftly consolidates her places among them and when they play football, Lisa looks on in admiration. In the truth and dare-like games (»Have you ever tasted your own pee«, »Exchange your gum with Lisa’s!«) »Mikael« also holds her own. Lisa falls in love with »Mikael«, but although this is, at most, a bit uncomfortable for »Mikael«, a planned swimming outing is cause for concern. But »Mikael« crafts a swimsuit out of her bathing costume and fits it with a willy she’s made from clay. You except to wind up seeing the green willy floating in the water, but director Celine Sciamma is wary of too much farce, and so things only go wrong when »Mikael« is caught taking a wee.
Apart from the wonderful natural play of the children – the director understands the need of giving them a lot of free reign in play – »Tomboy« also offers depth, and in the end it is Lisa who, by means of a simple game, draws »Mikael« out of her isolation. One of the deserved winners of the Teddy Awards, the »gay prize« of the Berlinale.

Rocky 62
Die Hauptrolle wird zwar nicht von einem Jungen gespielt, sondern das Thema wird hier ganz hervorragend und realistisch von Zoé Héran umgesetzt. Ein bemerkenswerter Film, der sich mit der Gender- und Transsexualität beschäftigt, welches uns im Kino nicht so häufig begegnet. Ein wichtiger Film, der Beachtung finden sollte. Leider kommt er in Deutschland erst mit weitem Abstand im Gegensatz zu anderen Ländern in die Kinos und vermutlich nur in ganz wenige.
Ganz nebenbei bemerkt gibt es in diesem Film auch ein Wiedersehen mit dem unvergeßlichen Mathieu Demy aus dem (Kult-)Film »Die Zeit mit Julien«, der in »Tomboy« den Vater von Laure alias Mikaël spielt. Siehe auch: http://www.heiners-filmseiten.de/index.php?action=filminhalt&filmid=58004

Ein sehr frischer, aber auch besinnlicher Film für Kinder, aber eigentlich vielmehr für Eltern, denn er stellt die Frage: Kennen und verstehen sie ihre Kinder wirklich? Hier werden Vorurteile und Kastendenken aufgezeigt und in Frage gestellt. Von den jungen Darstellern hervorragend gespielt.

Vorab eine kleine SPOILER-Warnung!
Nun meine Meinung: Der Film ist bis zur Mitte hin schön und geht behutsam mit dem Thema um. Am Ende fand ich die dargestellte Gewalt ziemlich bedauerlich (durch die anderen Kinder und durch die Mutter). Allein deswegen würde ich diesen Film Kindern auf keinen Fall zeigen. So macht der Film einem betroffenen Kind am Ende mehr Angst als Mut! Sehr, sehr schade!!
