A boy tries to substitute friendship for the lack of paternal love in his life. He meets »Blackbird«, a vagabond child who lives in an abandoned streetcar. Their friendship is not acceptable. The two boys meet and create their own world, secrets and miracles. Sadly, their world cannot last and the elders try to break it up.
A film about human need, to love and be loved and about the responsibility we all share for the happiness of other people.
Profa is a pre-teen who is not getting on at all well with his father. His mother has long since moved out and his Dad has a live-in girlfriend. One day on the way to school, a lad (who we come to know as Čavka, a nickname meaning »Dawe« as in »Jackdaw«) washes Profa’s car’s windshield at a stoplight in the hope of a tip. Profa’s Dad, a powerful local politician, runs the lad off. Later, we see Čavka enroll in school and end up in the same class as Profa. They end up bonding through their struggles with authority (Čavka is regarded as the perfect scapegoat by the school for every misdemeanor, as his mother is dead and his father is locked up for being involved in a street brawl) and with bullies. We learn that Čavka lives in an abandoned streetcar in a park and lives by catching fish. After some trials and tribulations, Čavka’s Dad gets released from the hoosegow and they ride off into the sunset. Profa is devastated at the loss of his only friend, but on the way to a new life, Čavka breaks into Profa’s bedroom and leaves him a cherished jackknife.
Slobodan Negic plays »The Professor«, a brainy kid born to wealth. His opposite number is the homeless, orphaned »Čavka« (Yugoslavian for »Blackbird«), portrayed by Marko Ratic. In the tradition of the »Our Gang« comedies of yore, the Professor is forbidden by his snooty parents from associating with such riffraff as Cavka. How the boys outwit their elders and have a wonderful time forms the nucleus of this carefree comedy-drama.
This Yugoslav-British co-production, was released to English-speaking theatres only a few months after its European debut.
