Sinopsis:
600 years ago, in the summer of 1398, the Stecknitz Canal was opened, connecting the North Sea to the Baltic from Lauenburg to Lübeck. It soon become the most important trade route in northern Europe, allowing the vital salt shipments from Lüneburg to reach Lübeck and the entire Baltic region. The wealth and power of the Hanseatic League rested mainly on their trade privileges on this canal. On the occasion of the canal jubilee, which was celebrated throughout the region, the film revives the history of the waterway in interviews and documentary footage combined with a fictional narrative of how Hannes, son of a canal guard in Lauenburg, stows away on a salt barge to Lübeck. On the way, he meets boatmen and draughtsmen, wild adventurers and greedy merchants. With youthful curiosity and a good dose of wanderlust, he makes it all the way to Lübeck, the »Queen of the Hanse«, city of tall ships and high towers.
