Original title: Yarik
Drama – Russia
Production year: 2007
Movie length: 78 minutes
Movie description:
In the last five years 62,000 Russian children have been abducted, taken out of the country and sold. The lucky ones are adopted by rich families in the West. Others are sold into a life of prostitution, drugs or crime. But many are murdered so their organs can be sold on the black market, often with the collusion of the Russian police. »Yarik« is the remarkable story of one of these children.
Little six-year-old Yarik sits patiently next to his mother in a busy train station in the middle of the night. They’ve come to Moscow to meet his father who’s been earning much-needed money on a construction site. It only takes a few hours to realize that Yarik’s father is not coming to meet them. Distraught, his loving mother goes to fetch him some food to eat with her last pennies leaving Yarik asleep in the arrival hall.
The boy wakes up and realizes that six hours have passed since his mother left him. Something has gone terribly wrong. Accepting that he can’t find his mother, Yarik decides to go into the big strange city to search for his father.
In his innocence, Yarik begins by trusting anyone and everyone he meets. But he soon learns that this is dangerous. One man, a drunk he meets at a police-station, offers to help him, but can he be trusted?
Yarik is a poignant and timely reminder of the genuine human rights issues affecting children in Russia, and around the world today.
Andrei Sherbinin, a script-writer wrote »Yarik the Robinson« in 2004. The story is based on real events that happened to Andrei himself. Occasionally he met with a ten-year old homeless child Andryusha. Andrei as the main character of the movie Boris tried to help the boy. The majority of scenes where participated Boris and Yarik are taken from life and Andrei duplicated many monologues.
