Movie description:
At the end of the Colonial War, a group of soldiers moves through the woods. Among them is officer Cabrita, a History graduate, who will recall other memories. From Viriatus and the fight for resistance against the Roman dominion, to the inevitable African disaster, Manoel de Oliveira revisits Portugal’s greatest military catastrophes.
Episodes from entire military history of Portugal are told through flashbacks as a professorish soldier recounts them while marching through a Portuguese African colony in 1973. He easily draws his comrades into philosophical musings, and the little contingent suffers badly at the hands of the local military opposition.
