Movie description:
Bill Januson is at the end of his rope. His wife has died, he’s lost his job, and he has no education or marketable skills to fall back on. He must find a way to provide for his family, but his fierce pride prevents him from accepting help from the well-intentioned – if somewhat misinformed – doctor who treats Bill’s sick daughter. After facing obstacle after obstacle, will Bill swallow his pride and let him help?
Hard-working Bill Janusen is downsized out of his job on the assembly line. His wife’s lengthy illness drains his resources, and when he loses her, he loses everything. He refuses to accept government aid or other assistance, and gets a job at a fast-food restaurant, bringing home leftovers to feed his children, Willa, 9, and Robbie, 11.
Prestigious surgeon Dr. Michael Millerton meets Willa when she visits his daughter, who is the same age. Willa, poorly dressed and very hungry, sneaks food from the kitchen. Michael loses a bet with his colleague, Dr. Vincent, and takes his place donating service at the community clinic where Bill brings Willa with a bad cough and persistent headaches. The diagnosis, that the child is anaemic and her immune system is weakened by poor nutrition, angers the struggling father.
Thinking he’s landed a job as busboy at an upscale eatery, Bill splurges with presents and steak for the family. But the owner hires someone else. Tensions run high, and Bill rages at Robbie: »You’re just another mouth to feed.« Michael wants to help, inviting the family for Sunday dinner, trying to get Bill a job at the hospital, even offering a loan. But every effort ends in awkwardness and failure.
Dispirited, Bill takes work at a car wash and gets groceries form a food bank. Robbie begins cutting school, and tries to earn money loading groceries and collecting aluminium cans. He teams with a lady mechanic, Gus, to restore a vintage car, and steals the family’s meagre savings to help finance the project.
Gus finds a buyer. Robbie’s share would have more than covered the cash he took from the family, but Gus’s daughter totals the car in an accident. Despondent and hopeless, Robbie reacts with desperation.
Through tragedy, Bill and Michael, whose lives are poles apart, recognize their commonality as members of the human family: an understanding that could offer some sense of hope for the millions of the world’s children who go to bed hungry.
