Short movie – India Production year: 2009 Movie length: 24 minutes
Director: Vinoo Choliparambi
Movie description:
Vitthal is angry, very angry. Following the death of his grandfather, according to Hindu death rituals, Vitthal’s parents have shaved off his head. For Vitthal his world has shattered. Nothing can pacify the mind of this 12 year old boy from feeling humiliation, isolation and anger.
»Vitthal«, a short film, is a brilliant display of how we force things on our children without even making an effort to make them understand it. More so in the case of religion and rituals. Children are actually discouraged from questioning anything about religion. Vitthal, the protagonist, is a boy who has just lost his grandfather. In adherence to the rituals, he has to shave off his hair. Like any 12 year old, Vitthal is wary of shaving off his hair. But he is forced to do so by his parents. What follows is a deep study of the psychology of what many such children in India go through.
