Alejandro Jodorowsky was born in 1929 in Tocopilla, a coastal town on edge of the Chilean desert, where this film was shot. It was there where he discovered the fundamentals of reality, as he underwent an unhappy and alienated childhood as part of an uprooted family.

Auch Altmeister Jodorowsky musste erhebliche Zugeständnisse an den »Zeitgeist« machen. Waren nackte Knaben quasi das Markenzeichen seiner früheren Filme, so hat er dieses Mal völlig darauf verzichtet. Alejandritos Klassenkameraden masturbieren sittsam bekleidet mit Holzpenissen. Und in der Szene, in der sich Mutter und Sohn von Kopf bis Fuß schwarz anmalen (eine Symbolik für inzestuöse Handlungen?) ist nur die Frau völlig nackt, Alejandro trägt ein (nicht einmal knappes) Unterhöschen. Schade ...
