Almost everyone despises Jack in the village. Madame Hrouda knows. While they are stripping feather and talking of Prince Pravoslaw, a guard is coming with a message for Jack to come immediately to the magistrate’s. What a surprise for her when magistrate Haresfoot asks her to administer the estate, the household and to take care of the youngest children, Dorotka and Bronislav. There’s no other choice for Jack, so she accepts the offer.
Nobody, however, of the estate shows any happiness of her coming. The most disgusted one is Janek. She is not accepted by the servants, either, as Jack wants everyone to work and not to steal. Florian does not lift a finger and the children are spoilt. Although Jack tries kindly to bring them up, the children don’t like it.
To take revenge upon her by a thorough thrashing, two servant girls with Janek get disguised for St. Nicholas, angel and devil. They do not a miss any occasion to play tricks on her. While Jack is working about the cattle, a fork falls down right next to her. Not a while may pass without intrigues plotted on her.
The magistrate finds Florian with a servant girl called Barca in the stack of hay. The yard full of anger and cruelty.
Christmas is coming and Homebird has come to see Jack. Jack complains to the magistrate she has no time for studying with Homebird, any more. Haresfoot promises Jack that things will change after Christmas. But in the meantime, he comes to see the parish priest to give him money in order to send Homebird to study in the town.
It is Christmas Eve again, and Florian is announcing to his father, at the festive board, he will get married. The servant girl Barca thinks he’s speaking of her, but when Florian goes on speaking of a rich bride, she starts to understand the misfortune.
While Jack is leaving in the Christmas night, she gets a glimpse of Janek crawling to the cellar. While coming back in her little chamber, Janek comes and presses 3 gold coins in her hand as a gift, and runs away.
Homebird is studying with Jack in the church. There she learns, to her great surprise, that Homebird was sent for his studies by the magistrate.
The calm life of Greenwood is impaired by the arrival of Florian’s wife. Nobody has ever seen anything like that. The richer she is, the more disgusting. Her name is Floxina and she is ugly, old and cheeky with everyone; she eats and drinks all she can see. In the end, they go to hot it up in the pub.
New Year’s midnight bells sound, the neighbours are drinking to the New Year, when a gale storms into the pub and Floxina carries her bridegroom away to the freezing night. Everyone understands that Florian has been taken to the hell by a devil. Anyway, that’s what he deserved.
