It is Corpus Christi and all the Greenwood inhabitants celebrate either at the altar or in the pub. Beta Tankard and Jack look like real dollies. Jack is doing well in the job and the pub-keeper’s wife is pleased of how much profit they have been having since Jack has been in the pub. Other people, like Florian and the magistrate’s wife, are not that pleased, however, especially when the magistrate makes comments on how much work she could have done.
Janek has changed, since Easter. He is afraid of anyone learning about the stolen treasure. It’s a nightmare.
Homebird, on the other hand, with all his skill and knowledge, is helping people in the village. The tackle he has made helps the Hroudas’ while repairing the roof. In the pub, he gives advice to the girls, from time to time, on how to make their work easier. Beta prefers beer, but Jack keeps her eyes and ears open, wishing to learn everything. That’s why Homebird once brings her the chronicle of the Scrubs’ family for her to learn more of Prince Pravoslaw she keeps thinking of.
Even the little George Hrouda wishes to study. Jack discovers a great talent in him and she prays for him to be taught by the parish priest. It starts to seem that nothing might put Jack’s life and the neighbour’s relationship to her in danger.
Appearances are really deceptive. Nobody is as envious of anything new and good in the village as the magistrate’s wife. Everything might endanger the power of the Haresfoots’. That’s why the magistrate’s wife keeps making intrigues. First, she wants to eliminate the spider woman. She is convinced the spider woman is the cause of all novelty in Greenwood. And thus, she secretly sends a guard to the Devil’s Pit to kill the spider woman with her little children. Right, not everywhere does the evil win. Thus, the guard does not come back as a winner from the Devil’s Pit, but as a loser.
The tranquil life in Greenwood is impaired by the election of poor king and queen. Jack and Homebird have been elected. It’s another great feast, where no folk customs kept in Greenwood for ages might miss. People are happy, only Florian and the magistrate’s wife can hide nothing of their hatred.
On a damp and cold autumn day, Jack is minding cattle, having a chat with the spider woman, when wolves appear in the wood. Jack drives them away with burning turf. The magistrate’s wife can see her from the opposite hill, and in the village she announces Jack is a devil’s companion, as a pack of wolves has run away in sight of her.
Suddenly, the pub is empty, as the neighbours believe the magistrate’s wife, and the Tankards’ are forced to dismiss Jack.
Winter is coming and fear has fallen upon Jack. She runs to the spider woman’s for help. The latter calms her down advising her to believe everyone’s acts will be justly rewarded. She might sometimes be advised even by the sky. Jack looks up and remains seized by terror. The magistrate’s wife is standing on the opposite hill threatening both Jack and the spider woman. Suddenly, there comes a thunderbolt and the magistrate’s wife is suffering in fire.
A funeral march is directed towards the cemetery. They are burying the magistrate’s wife; the magistrate wonders who will now play the landlady of their estate. Florian knows a suitable person...
