In a few years, Jack has grown up in a beautiful girl, and the way everything has always been trashed out in Greenwood at the pub »At the Tankards«, her beauty is being trashed out, as well. Some are pleased with her change, some are envious. A handsome boy has grown up from Homebird, as well, and the Tankards’ Beta pays special attention to him.
It’s Christmas Eve and madame Hrouda is bringing her dresses she used to wear when she was young, to Jack. It is the only present the girl receives. And thus she is having a chat with prince Pravoslaw’s picture, in the recess.
While picking mistletoe from a tree, she can see her parents again rushing in the wood, and she can hear them saying they are going to multiply their treasures. She does not understand, thus she prefers to make her best wishes to the Hroudas’ and to prepare the festive board. Her mother is driving her away from the Christmas Eve board for she might bring bad luck. They’d like to have her serve at the village magistrate’s. They say they are in trouble and Jack should help them. Both the magistrate and his son would admit her at once, but the magistrate’s wife does not want to. Jack is sad, she pops in the drugstore and gaffer gives her an amulet with hardhay blooms. »Hardhay once used to be called love, and it is said to be a thorn in devil’s flesh,« gaffer says.
Jack is still longing for knowledge, and thus Homebird teaches Jack, as if she was at school.
On Easter, comedy actors find their way to Greenwood, this time coming with a passion play, which leaves a deep emotional impression on Jack. Maybe because she has already learnt so much of suffering. On a spring evening, she is walking home, when the magistrate’s son Janek reaches her to ask her to come with him in the wood to pick golden fern. Jack rejects.
It is Easter Friday, dominating even the human fates. The Jiras’ know it, as well. Nevertheless, they go to the wood to have a look at their delight – the treasure. They have no idea of being followed by Janek. While they are turning back, Janek steels the pot with money. Suddenly, the Jiras’ decide to go to see if they have sealed their fortune properly. What a horror when they find the hiding place empty. They both swear giving the blame both the sky and the earth. There comes a rumble and they disappear in the depth of the earth. When Janek sees the horrible scene, he flights headlong from the wood.
Neighbour Hrouda has seen the Jiras’ sinking through the earth, as well, and thus it remains up to him to tell Jack. It’s useless for Jack to look for her parents, it’s useless to cry for their loss. She seeks comfort at the spider woman. She is given a beautiful spider mantle and an advice to think of the others more than of herself. From now on, she will be alone.
Jack looks for a job, she has to make her living somehow. The apothecary Chropac cannot pay her, and the magistrates’ do not want to admit her. In the end, Homebird comes with an offer for her to embroider table cloths for the pub-keeper’s wife. She’s so pleased with the job that she does not realise at all it has been raining for a few days, already. She finishes the job in time, but when she sees the flood spreading throughout the countryside, she is stunned, as the spider girl might drown with its children in the pit. And thus she runs first to save them. When the pub-keeper’s wife sees the table-cloths, she is moved and offfers Jack to stay working in the pub.
