The little George Hrouda takes his mum, a cordial kind-hearted madame Hrouda, to the Devil’s Pit. They look for Jack. There’s nobody, they already start to think of the worst alternative, when the small George sees her in the shrubs. Nothing has happened, fortunately.
It seems love has never been in the family of the village magistrate Haresfoot (Tuntera). His wife is a strict pitiless matron. The oldest son of theirs – the fop Florian (Florian), as well as his younger brother Janek, are malicious, as well. The only thing Janek likes, is his horse. Disobedient and churlish are even the house servants. As the saying goes: »Like master, like man.“
Jack likes to see the reasonable and wise gaffer Chropac – local herbalist and apothecary. She often pops in to learn something interesting. She often brings some herbs to the gaffer. On her way, she passes by the house of the Homebirds’ (Pecivalovi), where a widow with his son is living. Homebird is a bright and clever boy. Local parish priest often lends some books to him. Homebird learns that Jack is bright and wishes to have a chat with her, but Jack feels ashamed for she does not know how to read. Gaffer Chropac advises her to go to school. But her parents are poor.
One day, Jack sees her parents hurrying to the wood. She follows them, but she loses them. She does not know they went to hide their treasure. They have been hiding the saved money in a kitchen pot the whole life.
The village magistrate with a guard are passing from one house to another and ruthlessly collecting taxes for their king. They don’t miss the Jiras’. Mother wants to send Jack to serve at the estate, but Jack collects her courage to say to her parents she want to attend school. Naturally, there come troubles, big troubles.
After all the suffering, Jack sets out for the dangerous Devil’s Pit to collect butterbur. At the bottom of the pit, she strangely meets the spider girl Trapdoor with her children. She makes acquaintance with her and she has found a place where to look for advice or favour, from now on.
For the herbs, Jack is given a mug with prince Pravoslaw’s picture, by gaffer Chropac. She is pleased with it, as she is very much troubled by the prince’s fate. On a country fair, she can see for the first time the horrible story of prince Pravoslaw which makes her weep, played to the people by wandering players. Jack is given big, yet new clothes, after by madame Hrouda. Breathless in admiration she stops at a beautiful string of red beads. Naturally, it does not suit a boy, and thus the Hrouda brothers start to think there might be something strange about it, as she had been enchanted by the spider girl. They have no idea that she is behaving the way all girls of her age do. They decide not to leave the things like that, as Jack with spiders might suck all their blood.
They pick their sticks and set out to kill Trapdoor. She, however, entangles the oldest boy Francek in her net and if it weren’t for the small George, who knows what would be the end of all this.
Jack is coming back from the wood with a basket of herbs and suddenly the Bloody’s sphere turns back to her. The truth must come to light.
Summer is everywhere, in the fields as well as in the air, the Hroudas’ boys are building a small dam at the pond. They have already made it up with Jack, and thus they are calling her to come to have a bath with them. She is afraid, at first, but then she lets herself be convinced. She gets undressed and ... the boys start screaming, as Jack is not a boy, but a mere girl...
