On March 10, 1906, the region of Courrières in Northern France was the scene of one of Europe’s worst ever mining disasters. On that day, twelve year old Louis, a miner’s son, heads down the pit for the first time, unaware that an enormous firedamp explosion will shortly devastate 110 kilometres of tunnels in just a few seconds. With more than 1000 miners killed in this tragedy, down in the bowels of the earth a small group of survivors attempt to find their way out, wandering for days in pitch darkness through the tunnels, sustaining themselves with whatever food they come across. Up on the surface, Louis’ best friend Charles, the son of the chief engineer, discovers that his father has been doing the management’s bidding by agreeing to the closure of several pits on purely economic grounds when these could provide potential exits for any survivors. Three weeks after the disaster, when all hope appears lost, the small group of survivors reaches the surface unaided. Among them is young Louis. However, although Louis has survived this gruelling ordeal, his friendship for Charles, the son of the man who betrayed them, is now dead and buried.
