Old warrior of the First World War and ex resistance fighter, Charles Bertoux rules his family firmly, but is much loved by them. Walking with a stick from a war wound he is somewhat feared by the villagers and respected by his eight children. His wife, however, starts to tire of his dominance and begins to assert herself.
