Υπόθεση:
Turn-of-the-century Hungary. Two young brothers, neglected by their cold and uncaring mother, descend deeper and deeper into psychosis, with tragic consequences.
It is late 1913 and the seemingly endless Hungarian winter has descended. The Witman boys find themselves at a bit of a loose end when their authoritarian Dad drops dead of a heart attack. They quickly realize that Mom doesn’t care much for the pair, and will let them run wild as long as she isn’t bothered. The lads quickly start butchering animals of various types, though Ernö is a bit worried that a sin might be involved. In school, János in particular shows the low affect know to be a feature of some psychoses, in that he accepts corporal punishments for offenses committed by others (including Zöldi). One day, he watches a hooker get raped in a back of a carriage, with her blood-smeared face squashed up against the window. He forms a deep crush on her, and soon the two boys are coming to visit as often as they can (not difficult, when they cut school and roam the streets unchecked). A tragedy that might have been expected eventually occurs.
The death of tax-collector, Dénes Witman, leaves his close relatives unmoved. Mrs Witman, his selfish widow, cares little about her adolescent sons. With the father’s death, the family is left without rules. The Witman boys have to create their own. They are desperately searching for a meaning in their lives. When the boys arrive at an old brothel occupied by a young woman, they know they have found what they were looking for. At first, she is kind to them but rapidly she is not satisfied with her visitors and will only let them in if they bring her gifts. The boys find jewelery in a glass cabinet in their mother’s bedroom. They are prepared to do anything in order to get the jewels, even if it means killing their mother.
