Υπόθεση:
The Italian offering »Martino’s Summer« is a quiet tale about a 14-year-old boy’s special summer in 1980. Martino is an outsider in his elder brother’s circle of friends. This position also offers an advantage: to a far greater extent than the others he is open to the outside world, personified here by Clark, an American army captain stationed in Italy. While the clique around his brother mainly aspire to be typical Italian machos and are hostile to the Yankees, Martino is fascinated by the surfing soldier.
Initially, Clark is not very receptive to the lad’s attempts to befriend him, but Martino persists and finds hard-boiled Clark’s soft spot. An affectionate bond develops during the many hours in which Clark teaches the boy the basics of surfing and the two sit on the beach chatting. This imbues in Martino enough self-assurance to respond to the attempts of Ut, his brother’s girlfriend, to seduce him. Martino’s father, who is not amused by his son’s friendship, also loses out. The boy decides he’s been under the tyrannical man’s sway long enough, and his actions provide a life lesson to his American friend, who has told him he is out of touch with his own son.
The »feel-good« story Martino’s Summer’s is more layered than initially meets the eye. The events take place against the backdrop of the terrorist attack committed at Bologna’S train station in 1980. The story of Martino and Ut is also mirrored in flashbacks in the children’s book which Martino’s mother – since passed away – reads to him. A small gem of a film by Massimo Natale.
