The Dordogne, 1869. Pierre Naboulet, a poor tenant farmer, has drawn a lucky number in the French Army draft lottery. He will be exempt from a five-year period of military service. But he sells his number to Florent, a rich merchant, and takes the place of Florent’s son, Arnaud, who has been drafted. Pierre is a young conscript in the French army at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War. Slightly wounded, he is nevertheless unhappy to be apparently the only survivor out of his regiment, and in any case the battlefield has become chaotic. He decides to take a timeout and stumbles across a newly orphaned Alsatian boy, who doesn’t speak French, whom he takes under his wing. They have some adventures trying to escape the action going on all around them, during which Pierre carves a Madonna out of a wooden chip. They make it to the river, where they hope to float to safety. However, Pierre catches a stray round and dies shortly afterwards. The boy takes up with a wandering Dutch peddler. When they reach Pierre’s home village, the locals decide that Dutch sounds enough like German to justify burning the pair to death. However, Pierre’s girlfriend recognizes the handwork in the Madonna and takes the boy in to her family, where he apparently lives happily ever after.
