How would you react if one day, all of a sudden, you were told you belonged to the opposite sex? That’s what happened to Nourredine, the hero or heroine of this story. One morning Nourredine, who had always thought he was a boy, discovers that his mum, Fatima, has been lying to him for the past 11 years. In reality, he is a girl. But 11 years of playing ball games, joking with your mates and people telling you to be tough can’t be forgotten just like that. And anyway, what is it like to be a girl? That’s just what Nourredine is about to find out ...
»Garçon manqué« is a French expression for »Tomboy« that could literally be translated as »failed boy«. This is an odd little film made for French Television, about Nourredine, an Algerian boy who is coming to realize that he is actually a girl. When he was born in Algeria, his mother was in despair, knowing that her husband wanted a boy and that she would be unable to bear him further children, so she kept his true gender hidden, convincing herself that the girl would somehow grow into a man. The family is now living in France, and with the onset of puberty, the boy is still physically a girl, and by the fancy of this film he has not realized it up to now, nor has his father, nor has he been found out by his friends.
If online translated descriptions are to be believed, the mother claims she has been victimized by spirits, who convinced her that he would become the boy she desired.

Nun ja, die Geschichte ist etwas weit hergeholt und lebensfremd. Aber im Gegensatz zu anderen Produktionen zu dieser Thematik wird das Jungenmädchen hier von einem »echten« Jungen gespielt. Der Ärmste mußte also am Ende geschminkt und in Mädchenklamotten herumlaufen und zu allem Überfluss auch noch einen anderen Jungen küssen! Wenn das mal keine bleibenden Schäden hinterlassen hat ... ;-)
