Boys are, perhaps, competitive by nature, but when competition is carried to absurd lengths even boys are able to recognize that it is ridiculous.
Such is the case with Stig and Albin, who spend most of their nine-year long lives trying to outdo each other. Only when they have both eaten live dew worms and broken their right and left leg respectively, in an attempt to prove which one of them could jump to the ground from the highest place, do they admit to each other from adjacent hospital beds that their competitiveness has become plain silly.
The film is about two rival boys, Albin and Stig, whose mothers have them compete against each other throughout their childhood. The rival mothers compete in whose child will learn to walk and talk first. As the boys grow older and start school, they begin to compete by themselves. Competitions include seeing who dares to jump to the ground from various high places, including a tree, a bridge, and a hayloft. They also have a earthworm-eating contest. One day, as they compete for who dares to jump from the roof of a barn, both boys break a leg and end up at the hospital. As they begin to recover, the boys laugh with each other, realizing how stupid their rivalry has been.
