Υπόθεση:
Peace within war. An adult voice narrates a story of childhood during World War II when he lived with his mother, brother, and sister on an estate in Australia’s Hunter Valley, his father away fighting, and two Italian prisoners of war staying with them, in effect being his papa. They are joined by Jewish refugees from Berlin, a mother and daughter. There’s heat between the German daughter, Rachel, and Joseph, one of the Italians, and there’s an attraction between Dorothy, the head of the family, and Alfredo, the other Italian. A carriage accident, a tick, the local martinet, Madame Guttman’s pride, and the change that comes with peace threaten to bring tragedy. Plus, father may return.
Australia, near the end of WWII: Dorothy and her three young children, Mercia, Denis and Brendan, live on a country farm. Husband and father William has been at war since five years in New Guinea. The children barely remember their father since he had left Dorothy, which was pregnant with Brendan. On the farm live also Alfredo and Joseph, two Italian prisoners of war,. Alfredo becomes a father figure to Brendan and his siblings, and there’s much love, joy and understanding. Soon Dorothy and Alfredo fall in love. The family later accommodates two German refugees, Madam Guttman and her daughter Rachel. The two women work hard while struggling with different cultural identities. While madam Guttman lives her German descent, Rachel wants to become Australian citizen. William’s return to the farm causes troubles since Dorothy is still in love with Alfredo, who is more father to the children than William ever was.
