Υπόθεση:
It is the first day of the summer vacation. Jojje, Jerker and Fabian wants to borrow a sailing boat to take a boat trip so they steal it. They plan to examine all of Lake Maelaren, but a storm breaks out and the boat sinks. They go ashore, steal food and a new boat. While everybody else believes them to be dead, they have a wonderful time. They meet a crazy Count and find a dead body.
This is the time of the summer holidays when exasperated parents are starting to turn to desperate measures to get their offspring from under their feet. Sending them on poorly equipped and unsupervised sailing trips is always a good one, as there’s a fair chance they won’t even come back. Remember Arthur Ransome’s pre-war classic Swallows and Amazons, about the children who go on a sailing adventure in the English Lakes? Their father famously gave the trip his blessing with the gnomic telegram BETTER DROWNED THAN DUFFERS IF NOT DUFFERS WON’T DROWN. Once the meaning is decoded it can be taken as a vote of confidence, but it still seems a weirdly callous attitude to take about your own children.
Mälarpirater isn’t the story of those goody-two-shoes Swallows, it’s about what happened to the Duffers. Set in Sweden round about the same era it tells of the misadventures of three boys who set sail one summer in a small dinghy on Lake Mälaren. Without even asking permission!! It’s no surprise they’re shipwrecked before the first day is out. Unbowed by their narrow scrape with drowning the lawless brats take over an abandoned but well provisioned yacht and, with all the grown-ups believing them dead, set out on a piratical raiding campaign along the extensive shores and islands of the lake.
Luckily they don’t do too much harm. Minor house-breaking is the worst of it; plus they spy on some naked girls (serves the little minxes right for splashing so loudly). But the adventure starts for real when they arrive at an old house occupied by a group of eccentric people who seem to be using it as a centre for undirected psychotherapeutic treatment with a strong emphasis on role-playing sessions. Either that or it’s a squat full of dangerous headcases with a fondness for dressing-up games and skeleton-play  ...
It’s this plot development that turns Pirates of the Lake from an ordinary children’s adventure into something suitable for Surreal Moviez. Actually the very first scene is a dream sequence – talk about showing willing! There’s some emotional baggage explored as well, and though I couldn’t follow the finer points of the storyline I still found this to be an enjoyable and attractively photographed mix of nostalgia and escapism.
