Υπόθεση:
Amid the detritus of WWII, and in the shadow of the Cuban missile crisis, 12-year-old Norbi is growing up in the small Luxembourg mining town of Esch, more fixated on how to get his hands on comic books and cigarettes and listen to equally forbidden rock’n’roll.
Norbi’s parents are essentially proper citizens who run a small stationery shop, are appropriately god-fearing (some of his father’s clients include nuns and priests) and endlessly worried about the education of Norbi and his older sister Josette in a time that saw the flowering of readily available comic books, rock music and cigarettes. All of these commidities and more are strictly off-limits for the siblings, courtesy of a small, church-approved booklet on child-rearing that is strictly imposed by their father. This does not mean however, that he is surly man; through Jung’s terrifically layered performance it becomes clear that his father-figure applies the rules of a pious upbringing because he is expected to, not because he does not have a sunny personality. A short scene in which Norbi and his old man walk home from Sunday Church underlines this perfectly, and the single most hilarious scene (involving the dreaded birds-and-bees talk) is a gem because it so accurately reflects the parents’ characters; their willingness to do good and do right and by mixing them becoming awkward.
Decidedly less sunny in disposition than his father is Norbi’s schoolteacher Mr. Treines (afraid that the people in last row will not hear him), a bully of a man who is strangely obsessed by Indians. Mr Treines is strictly observed from little Norbi’s perspective, turning him even more into a charicature than he already is, a technique that is equally successfully applied to his footloose aunt Zëss and the Rasputin-like healer Mr Pendelmayer.

Gute Inhaltsangabe, wobei ich noch dazufügen möchte, daß besonders der Vater noch ziemlich verklemmt ist, man könnte meinen, man sei noch in der Zeit vor dem 1. Weltkrieg. Er ist schneller mit dem Stock zur Hand, aber wenn es um eine wirklich und wahre sexuelle Aufklärung geht, dann ist er ziemlich kleinlaut.
Aber er zeigt eine gute Einsicht, wie das Leben in den sechziger Jahren war.
