»Grasshoppers Island« was about three brothers, Thoughy, Smarty and Mouse, who lived in a tall town house. They were looked after by all sorts of different people, but none they liked in particular. So they packed a trunk and ran away from the world of grown-ups in search of an uninhabited island where they could live as they pleased. They left a note explaining that theyare going away for a year and a day ... The island they find seems to have an endless supply of fish and fruit, but, as is the nature of people, a pecking order began to evolve. Smarty discovered that being boss was a lonely business. He also discovered that Grasshopper Island was not uninhabited. In a large house on the other side of the mountain lived Cornelius Button, an unworldly grasshopper expert, and his crotchety housekeeper Lupus. The two groups come together in defence against a common enemy from the mainland and all agree that the important thing is to find the best way of enjoying life-without spoiling the enjoyment of others.
