Johan, a newspaper correspondent, his wife Lotta and their two children, 12-year-old Alice and her younger brother Pontus, live a comfortable middle-class life that is shattered when Johan has an affair with a neighbour, single mother Anna. Johan would like to keep the affair quiet, but both Anna and Lotta force him to choose. When Johan moves out, the split is disastrous for their children. Not only for Alice and Pontus, but also for Anna’s 12-year-old son Patrick, who is still dreaming of his own father’s return. At home and at school, Alice is in denial. Her father is »away on a trip«, she tells her friends, but soon she cannot ignore the whispers. A weekend excursion with Johan and Pontus to Johan’s new house on an island turns ugly when Alice wakes up to discover that Anna and Patrick live there too. »Come rescue me, Anna has locked me in a garbage bin«, she pleads in a phone message to her mother. That night, in the middle of a driving rainstorm, Lotta and Alice’s grandparents show up to take her and Pontus home.
