Based on a memoir of English writer Laurie Lee, and featuring narration by Lee himself, this »Mobil Masterpiece Theatre« begins in wartime 1918 with Lee’s family moving to the Gloucestershire countryside. Juliet Stevenson shines as the matriarch of this large blended family, a compassionate and distracted woman who pines for the brood’s missing father. The movie takes Lee from a young boy sleeping in his mother’s bed through his girl-obsessed adolescence, fondly dealing with an assortment of relatives, schoolmates, and villagers along the way. Lee doesn’t actually have cider with girlfriend Rosie until a few minutes before the movie ends, but in the meantime Charles Beeson, directing from an adaptation by John Mortimer, has offered up a gentle homage to a long-passed era.

Â»Cider With Rosie« is a film which beautifully captures the long gone hazy summer days and cold winter nights experienced by Laurie Lee, a little boy growing up in the countryside just after the first world war, with a large noisy family which includes the wonderfully »dizzy« Ma.
On moving in day, Ma is quite happy to fill the rooms with wild flowers and – slightly broken – ornaments; leaving the older girls & boys to move in the cart-load of furniture and look after »Lol« the littlest one who, being dumped unceremoniously in the garden, soon begins his lifelong love of his new rural surroundings.
The film is full of curious and very entertaining characters, from the warring Grannies – »Her up Top« and »Her Below« to the somewhat sad local lady of ill repute, and lots of »goings on« in the local community – all woven into the story of Laurie’s growing and learning; finally having his first encounter with Rosie and a jug of cider under the hay wagon at harvest time!
