Young Peter has a difficult time adjusting at school having been confined to a wheelchair after an accident. He still wants to participate in the school outing and play and wants to come up with a way to make the play actors fly like fairies. By chance the local inventor Quirinus Drijfhout and his son Felix have just perfected their »Zerostraler«, a machine that can make any object float in mid air.
After a stay in hospital, twelve-year-old Peter returns to school in a wheel-chair. His sullen resentment, particularly at not being able to take part in the school play, alienates the other children. He tries to come to terms with his injuries and get back on good terms with his friends at school. A meeting with a famous inventor, Professor Drijfhout, enables Peter to provide a solution to a special effects problem in the play and get back in his classmates’ good graces. He comes into the possession of a bag of candy that has the ability to float, courtesy of the professor and his candy-loving assistant. A couple of clumsy crooks think they can make some money with the invention. When the candy balls accidentally fall and roll through a school bus full of children, the vehicle begins to really take off – and up.
