»Black Turin« is an accurate film which lays a trap for the viewer. For although the film seems at first the story of the virtuous enterprises of two boys who investigate their father’s wrongful arrest, it then changes track suddenly to show how the the fabric of the lives of a downtrodden populace is shot through with the corroding thread of Mafia. The director Carlo Lizzani and his well-informed and selective screenwriters apply the grim principles of Italian neorealism to the sort of juvenile detection tales we recall from our youth. The splendid photography of Pasqualino De Santis confers a spectral light to the industrial setting, in which victories of blood and lust are violently celebrated.
