Description du film :
The Pale of Settlement, based on true events, tells the story of a 10 year old Jewish boy, Moische, who escapes forced conscription into the Russian Army during the Crimean War.
The Pale of Settlement follows the trials of a ten year old Jewish peasant, Moische, living in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains during the Crimean War, as he tries to escape soldiers sent to forcibly conscript him into the Russian army.
The film is inspired by true events that happened to the filmmaker’s great grandfather during the Russian Civil War and is set during the time period of Khappers . During this period, 1827 until 1857, the Russian government imposed a harsh recruitment quota on the Jewish communities within The Pale of Settlement. The quota was part of an anti-semitic campaign by Tsar Nicholas I designed to eradicate any memory of the Jewish identity within Russia. The recruited boys were sentenced to serve 25 to 40 years in the Russian army, and their period of service did not start until they turned 18.
Often, the local Jewish Council of Elders, Kahals, would be faced with a shortage of eligible recruits and would have to resort to hiring khappers, bounty hunters, to go and kidnap underage children from peasant families to fill out the quota. These children ranged from 8 to 11 years old and most of them died before they saw their families again.
The film starts with these Khappers arriving at the home of young Moische to take him away....
