One night he will »fetch the silver from the night sky« – Jonas loves his father’s magical stories. When Helge dies, Jonas ends up in an orphanage whereupon dreariness and discipline rule his life – until a group of circus performers appear in the village.
In a medieval world of fantasy, Jonas lives on a desolate beach with his father, who has become unsuccessful as a fisherman as stocks have been wiped out. The pair suffers indignities but try to hold onto their pride. One day, his father goes out fishing but only the boat comes back. Jonas is sent to live with the local pastor, a brutal disgrace to his profession. Jonas is prepared to surrender his hopes and dreams to try to survive, but the owner of a travelling circus spins a fantastic tale based on the boy’s life, and Jonas learns how to be a boy again.
