Sinopsis:
Greenwood is saying good-bye to two students. To Homebird and to the Hroudas’ little George. Strange sounds can be heard from the estate, at night. In the morning, Jack finds out wolves have been raging in the sheep stalls. The magistrate orders Janek to bring wood from the forest, but Janek is afraid for his horse.
Jack is playing with children on the snow. She teaches them to draw characters in the snow. Suddenly she can see the soothsayer Bloody rushing by. The truth will soon come to light, again.
Children are boasting to their father with the characters they have learnt, in the evening, but he just cuts them short badly. He is worried about the estate and about Janek, as well. The latter is standing in the garden by a dead horse. Jack comes to take him quietly in the house. Another disaster comes in the morning. The cows have stopped milking and children reproach Jack, for since she came, everything has been turning bad. They blame her for the Janek’s raving, too. Jack is nursing the ill Janek. He is constantly getting worse, until Jack sets out to bring help from gaffer Chropac. His herbs, some of them miraculous, help Janek a little bit.
A servant girl called Veruna calls the landlord to come to see the cattle. When she leaves door to the chamber open, Jack notices a heap of coins a great number of papers. She enters and scared enough she goes through them. She finds out the magistrate has been steeling people’s money. When the magistrate comes back, Jack is already hidden in her chamber, scared.
Homebird has come to see Jack, at Easter. Jack want to have a talk to him of all that she has encountered in the estate, but the magistrate prevents her from that. The magistrate has taken a fancy in Jack and wishes to marry her.
One night, Janek comes asking her to listen to him. Jack follows him to the cellar where she learns the horrible story of the way Janek stole the treasure from her parents and the way they died.
Jack does not percieve the magistrate is in there and has heard everything. He asks she again to marry him. She refuses, and moreover, she orders him to give back the money he has collected unlawfully to the people of Greenwood. The magistrate threatens Jack to prevent her from telling anybody. Then he locks Jack in the cellar and the day after, he summons the village tribunal in the village square. He prefers suing an innocent girl to admitting that everyone might learn the truth of him.
Jack is accused of murder of her parents and stealth of their property. The sinister magistrate’s tribunal proposes a death punishment. The crowd of village inhabitants almost lets themselves be manipulated by the magistrate’s anger. Only Homebird will save Jack from her death. He knows that such a verdict can only be made in the castle. In a wooden cage, the guards are taking her to the castle of Reasonberg, where she will be judged by the king.
Homebird has come to say good bye to her, on her way. He only makes in time to pass to her a bundle from madame Hrouda and gaffer Chropac, before the guards knock him cruelly to the ground.
It’s night. Everyone is sleeping in the estate, only the wakeful Janek is spreading ardent fire in the attic, watching everything to be swallowed by the big flame. The magistrate’s estate is in fire, together with everyone that is inside.
