Sinopsis:
Women are coming in a battlefield, looking for their killed husbands and mourning for the dead. Queen Beluna, duchess of the iron corps, passes among them with her triumphant smile. The cruel battle has just been finished and the Queen thanks the Goddess Tyrant for her victory. She promises anything the Goddess might ask for, for the successful battle. Beluna is not moved by the misery of the widows. She is accompanied by a knight called Vagabond (Vagabund).
Joyful news is being announced from the castle of Reasonberg (Rozumberk). A son, prince Pravoslaw, has been born to king Maximilian Scrub and Queen Beluna. Crowds of retainers are coming to bring their gifts to the prince. Neighbours from the nearby village of Greenwood are among them.
An uncommon guest, not very popular with people, Love, is coming, as well. She has brought a bouquet of hardhay to put in the baby’s cradle. Some of the people bow to pick a few flowers, landlady Hrouda and gaffer Chropac among them ... The King and the Queen are offended by such a plain gift. They throw the flowers away from the prince’s cradle and cast Love out from the country. They have no idea of what a misfortune they are bringing about to their kingdom. The King prohibits love in the country.
Suddenly, there comes a thunderbolt, heavy steps are heard, and before people can recover from the shock, the cradle is empty. It is useless for the king to look for his son. From a soothsayer called Bloody (Racajda) he learns that Godess Tyrant has collected the Queen’s gift and taken the baby to her castle. Only Love could have saved it. The raging King wants to mute the truth and imprisons the soothsayer in a crystal sphere. Yet, truth cannot be muted, and Bloody will always appear there where truth must be brought to light.
We are meeting all the inhabitants of this small community in the pub at the Tankards’ (u Korbelu). They are talking of all that has happened in the castle. Later on, in the evening, while the greedy Jiras’ family are coming back from the pub, staring with envy to their neighbours, the Hroudas’ and their children, madame Jira laments she would like to have a baby, as well. She can see a star falling, and thus she prays so ardently for a baby, that it really comes true and she becomes pregnant. Madame Jira is not satisfied. She wishes not just to have a baby, she wants to have a boy, to keep up with the Hroudas’. What a panic in the Jiras’ house when she learns to have given birth to a girl. Mr. Jira, to get rid of the problem, solves his wive’s anger in his own way: » ... we will call her Jack and say to everyone she’s a boy.« The Fairy Godmothers are the only beings to know the truth, and they know what to give Jack in order to make her survive all the difficulties awaiting her in her life. The first difficult experiences are prepared for her by her parents. Jack keeps working at home from the morning till the evening, without any praise or sign of love. Nobody will save her from the neighbours’ children laughing at her. Nothing and nobody will help her, when the ghosts – the Hrouda boys – chase her up to the mysterious and scary Devil’s Pit, on St. John’s Eve.
