Sinopsis:
My Life So Far is the fictional (but based on a real) autobiography of one Fraser Pettigrew, age 10, scion of an upper class Scottish family growing up on his grandmother’s estate in the 1920s.
It covers the period in time from Fraser’s earliest memory (climbing out on the roof when he was supposed to be in bed napping) up to the resolution of the conflict that arises when Fraser’s aging millionaire uncle arrives with a new 25 year old girlfriend.
Assuming that, since he is the elder brother, he will inherit the estate when his mother (Fraser’s grandmother) dies, the uncle starts ordering his brother (Fraser’s father) about, demanding a halt to several enterprises that require modification of the estate, such as (of all things) a moss farm.
When Fraser’s father naturally takes offence at this the fight is on. The uncle lets it be known that he will evict Fraser and his family upon inheriting the estate. Partially to escape this turmoil, but mostly out of an insatiable childish curiosity, Fraser retreats to the attic, which he is strictly forbidden to do, and for good reason; stored therein is his late grandfather’s collection of (very) soft pornography. Reading about prostitution in one of his grandfather’s books, Fraser brings up the subject at a dinner party with several guests, including the vicar. It all ends well, however, except for the expected lack of closure inherent in the title.
Fraser (Robert Norman), the ten-year-old narrator, lives on a lovely estate in the Scottish Highlands during the 1920s that is presided over by the domineering Gamma Macintosh (Rosemary Harris). Her daughter Moira (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) has six children including the always-curious Fraser. She is married to Edward (Colin Firth), a wildly eccentric inventor, Beethoven enthusiast, moralist, and head of a moss factory.
Life in this pleasantly isolated wonderland hums along nicely until Moira’s brother, Uncle Morris (Malcolm McDowell), shows up with his French fiancée Heloise (Irene Jacob), an attractive woman who’s half his age. She befriends Fraser and immediately sets in motion his secret interest in naked ladies and the mysteries of sex. Much to everyone’s dismay, Edward also falls in love with this alluring young woman. Fraser is forced to shed his idealized view of his father for a more realistic one. My Life So Far is filled with many magical moments that reveal the bounties of a wonder-filled life.
