Sinopsis:
Single mother Sun Liying has a particularly hard lot in life. Her son, Zheng Da, is deaf, which was the reason that his father divorced Sun Liying. Now Zheng’s mother is not only obliged to earn a living for herself and her son, she alone is responsible for bringing up her son. Zheng is now of an age to start school and she practices speaking with him so that he can attend a normal school. Sun quits her well-paid job and starts doing a newspaper round instead, so that she can spend all day with her son. She is convinced that he is no different to other children and that wearing a hearing aid is no different to wearing glasses. But the truth is quite different. Zheng Da fails the admissions examination, ends up being teased by the other children for being deaf and is beaten up when he tries to defend himself. His hearing aid is smashed during the struggle, but there’s no way that Sun Liyung can afford to buy him a new one.
One of the teachers at the primary school, Fan Zipin, makes overtures to Sun Liying,which she is not inclined to rebuff. Giving up everything to help her son has made her lonely and, even though she is bitterly disappointed in men, she admits to her friend,Da He, that she longs for love and affection. Life has given her a tough exterior, but it has also made her strong, and so, when a businessman who owes her money tries to rape Sun Liying, she succeeds in fighting him off. She even gets her money back and is able to buy Zheng Da a new hearing aid. But Zheng Da doesn’t want to wear it any more. Mother and son start to row and, during the course of their argument, Sun Liyung is confronted with a few painful home truths.
