Sinopsis:
Abel Mason is a man caught in a loveless marriage with a harridan wife who constantly berates him and beats their son Dick. When the one woman he loves dies at the hands of her husband after he was sent a letter by Mason’s wife, exposing the affair, Abel leaves her for good taking to the road and young Dick with him.
Adaptation of the Catherine Cookson novel, set during the Depression years. A tragedy forces a married man and his son to live a life of deception. Through the years, the lies have far reaching consequences for the father and son and the women they love. Unhappily married Abel Mason, attempting to escape his insufferable wife Lena, flees to Yorkshire, where he enters into an illegal matrimonial union with a wealthy widow. The web of deceit becomes even more tangled when Abel falls in love with his new wife’s sister Florrie.
