Vidhu is a non-schooling boy whose fate dramatically changes after a tourist humiliates him saying that he is not worth a dollar. It’s a »refreshing« family movie about a boy searching for his true hero.
Vidhu is a boy who eagerly wants to go to school as other boys of his age, but unfortunately is deprived of that right for reasons beyond his control. He does not have a legitimate father. Mother earns only few bucks hardly sufficient to feed him. They live in an isolated house in a coastal tourist-town. Other than the knowledge of English acquired by talking to tourists, Vidhu does not have any form of formal primary education. One day a tourist throws a dollar note, thinking as if Vidhu is a beggar. »Why do you give me money? What did I do to you to earn this money?«, Vidhu asks. »What a little boy like you who hasn’t even gone to a school can do to earn a dollar from me?«, the tourist asks in return. Vidhu takes this question as an insult and as a challenge. He is determined to add a value to his life which is not worth of a dollar now. The story of the film is his attempt to make his dream a reality.
The film features an adolescent boy called Vidhu, presumably, an offshoot of a politician. With no birth certificate, he is denied access to free education. His mother, a prostitute and pickpocket, educates him and pushes him up the ladder. With his inborn skill of speaking, he overwhelms the whole country and achieves what he has been »dreaming in daylight«. Simultaneously, the politician, insinuated to be his father, tries to manoeuvre Vidhu to attract audiences to his superior’s election rallies. The catalyst of the film revolves around the politicians’ arduous attempt at manipulating the child into speaking on the political stage, and the child’s resistance to speaking on the school stage at the same time.
The story entails a layer of fantasy, and achieves a closure similar to that of »Slumdog Millionaire«.
