Sinopsis:
A lame servant boy tries saving a buffalo from sacrifice and his brother from estrangement.
In a small village in North Karnataka, a lame servant boy, Basu takes care of his land-lord’s buffaloes. Their male buffalo Babu, to whom he is attached, is slated for sacrifice at the Altar of Dyamauwwa, a Hindu goddess as an offering for the birth of a male child. Basu’s orphaned younger brother Mani is meanwhile being treated as surrogate son by his landlord. Saint Basvanna’s poetry can be Basu’s only voice against the hypocritical understanding of their own caste. He is soon forced to take a decision and the repercussions of any action are inevitably tainted with nature’s helpless enormity of chance. At once allusive, subtly dealing with family relationships and ridden with the complications of religious doctrine, the film is related in a traditional »katha« form.
Lingayata Dharma was founded by Basvanna to abolish caste, inequal-ity and to create a sensible people singularly devoted to the Linga (Shiva). His Veerashaiva poetry goes against hypocritical human nature and various religious traditions like sacrifice.
