Sinopsis:
Because of his sick younger brother, Takumi has moved to a country town in Okayama. He’s a very talented baseball pitcher, but can’t pitch to his satisfaction because he can’t trust the catcher. Go, a catcher at a local children’s baseball team, wants to form a »battery« duo with Takumi. Their battery seems to be doing well, but when they go to junior high school, their differences in technique are so apparent that Takumi suggests disbanding the battery. The trust between Takumi and Go is restored by Takumi’s younger brother, who is desperate to save the duo. But that evening the brother collapses with an illness and the mother blames Takumi for involving the brother in baseball. But his mother realizes Takumi’s passion for baseball and comes to the game for support, where Takumi is pitching with all his might.
Based on Asano Atsuko’s best-selling novel, Battery brings audiences back to younger years and simpler sentiments. Director Takita Yojiro takes a big step away from the aesthetic of his previous films Ashurajo no Hitomi and When the Last Sword is Drawn to present a heartwarming story about youth and baseball. In addition to young leads Hayashi Kento and Yamada Kenta, who were especially selected for their baseball talents, »Battery« features an impressive veteran supporting cast including Kishitani Goro, Sugawara Bunta, and Amami Yuki.
Junior high student Harada Takumi is a pitching prodigy, but his attitude and arrogance alienates him from schoolmates and even his own family. His father is completely uninterested in baseball, and his mother spends most of her energy fussing over his ill younger brother. Takumi finally finds a friend and partner in classmate Nagakura Go, a catcher who greatly admires Takumi’s pitching. Together they form a »battery« and join the school baseball team, but the friends have a falling out after a loss, bringing the team to a standstill. At this time, Takumi’s brother becomes seriously ill, and his only hope is for Takumi to win the big game for him.
