Medea
Movie description:
As Jason grows into manhood, he is told by his »mothering« (»fathering?«) Centaur that his destiny is to reclaim the position on the throne his uncle is now sitting upon. Trouble is, blood isn’t much thicker than water when it comes to having power, Jason’s uncle informing him he will give up the spot only if he can retrieve a worshipped medallion from a clan of barbarians. While setting out to fulfil the mission, our hero meets Medea: a sorceress from the barbarian tribe who has happened to run off with the sought after object. The two hit it off, have a romance and two sons, but Jason quickly forgets Medea when his uncle decides not to forfeit his kinghood, will allow his nephew royalty only if he marries his cousin. Medea then finds herself a bit perturbed, develops a magical plot of revenge. Honestly, the first third of this film had me lost; Pier Paolo Pasolini’s adaption of the Euripides tragedy might be best appreciated/understood by those very familiar with the play. Regardless, it is nicely directed and certainly of interest. The child roles are limited, but several appear throughout the film, the lead characters’ sons having about twenty minutes worth of screen time and the most significant kid parts, the boys quite necessary for the movie’s climax. Maria Callas, a famous soprano, stars as Medea. An art-lover’s film which those who consider themselves as such may or may not appreciate.
