Movie description:
A group of teen boys go to Rome in this controversial art film.»The Genesis Children« has been produced in 1970 by Billy Byars, who left his graduate work on molecular biology to become a filmmaker. He searched for many years for a writer that could express the philosophy that his involvement with research science had moved him to. In Rome, Italy he met Anthony Aikman and together they structured an allegory of unusual form, based upon the two men’s mutual view of existentialism, and Billy Byars’ scientific insight into the evolutionary process.
Much of the truth and beauty of the film evolved from living, and creating, and interpreting together, of the films makers, and its actors, in an environment quite different from the settings of an average film.
All of the moments captured on film remained to be interpreted and structured by the creatively analytical mind of editor Jeremy Hoenack. Jeremy Hoenack is himself something of a phenomena, a physicist turned filmmaker.
The poetry of Barbara Smith and the music of Jerry Styner are essential elements in the filmatic symphony of The Genesis Children.
In the decades since its release, no similar film has generated more public interest, or controversy, than The Genesis Children. Considered lost for almost twenty years, The Genesis Children has acquired mythic stature among art house devotees. Still controversial over two decades after its initial release, The Genesis Children’s uninhibited naturist sentiments and fiery anti-establishment climax incurred the wrath of critics and censors nationwide.
Peter Glawson portrays the charismatic leader of a high-spirited student group on holiday in Italy. The film’s publicist at the time described the surreal adventures of Peter and friends as a free-flowing, four-part »multi-sensual symphony«, bereft of traditional story line. One national critic described the boys’ anarchic revelry as »a dream-like descent from civilization into chaos reminiscent of Lord of the Flies«.
