Movie description:
When 21 year old Leo, the oldest of four brothers, announces to his rural French family that he’s HIV+ family bonds are tested. The family decides that 11 year old Marcel, the youngest, is too young to understand and the family agrees to keep the unsettling news from him. Marcel overhears enough to understand that something amiss with Leo and when the two travel to Paris together, Marcel confronts Leo with what he suspects.Leo is a gorgeous 21 year-old gay man who lives with his parents and three siblings in a French suburb. At 21, he’s the eldest of four; Marcel, age 11, is youngest. With their relatively young parents, they’ve always been happy and close-knit. Each is fairly open and accepting of Leo’s homosexuality, but after learning he has AIDS, the family is faced with a situation that will eventually test all bonds.
Worried that Marcel is too young to deal with this devastating news, he’s omitted from the family discussions of Leo’s HIV status. But one night after dinner Marcel overhears talk about Leo’s health, and the news comes as a bombshell. The family continues pretending everything’s fine to Marcel-and perhaps even to itself.
When Leo flees to Paris in search of an old boyfriend, he takes Marcel with him and nothing will ever be the same. Produced for French television as part of a series dealing with issues facing young people, CLOSE TO LEO realistically presents the issues of sexuality and acceptance with an honesty and insight that is seldom seen on U.S. television.
