Movie description:
A new teacher arrives at a small village in rural Thailand. He has just left the monkhood and has taken a job at the local school in a quest to discover life outside the monastery. He finds that one of his pupils is a mute girl who is being bullied by the other children in the class. Both the teacher and the girl must face the challenges and cruelties of the real world. The girl retreats into a fantasy world, finding solace in the forest with a strange wild boy. The teacher struggles to bring her back, whilst at the same time himself questioning the world of reality. The worlds of fantasy and reality clash with tragic consequences.
After a decade, Preecha has just left the monkhood to search for a new meaning of life. His aspiration is abruptly dashed by the clichéd hardships and hopelessness of life in the northeast, told to him by the schoolmaster. Along with his inspiration, the teacher meets a mute and lonely girl, Ja, who is often bullied by a group of classmates.
Ja in fact can speak, but she does so only with her drunk father and a mysterious boy, Boy, whom she meets in the forest. While their friendship grows, several strange incidents take place in the village. The boy kills a man and eats him. When he learns that Ja is being bullied by the village headman’s daughter, Boy takes revenge, leading to the burning down of the forest by the village headman. Who is this boy? Ja finally finds the truth from her own quiet father – something more tragic than anyone expected.
But Teacher Preecha, despite his failed attempts to stop the headman’s cruelty, finally employs his Buddhist knowledge to bring these two young spirits toward their ultimate lives.
Ja is a shy, petite schoolgirl who lives in three worlds. Her day world is the schoolhouse, where, despite the gentle encouragement of her new teacher Mr. Preecha, she never speaks a word and is bullied by three much bigger girls. By night, she lives alone with her alcoholic father. And then there’s the mysteriously dreaded forest that spans the distance between the two. Ja walks the path to and from school every day, until one afternoon on her way home, she seeks refuge in the forest, where the mean girls dare not follow. In her flight, she encounters a wild, naked boy who does his brutish best to scare her away, but even he isn’t as menacing as her hateful schoolmates. Thereafter, despite the dark rumors of the evil that lurks within, she takes a shortcut through the forest every day; and over time, Ja and Boy forge a peculiar friendship. Suspense reaches a crescendo on a wildly stormy night, and in its aftermath, long-buried secrets finally see the light of day.
