Annals of Brekkukot
Movie description:
The story takes place in Iceland in the beginning of the twentieth century and deals with the orphaned boy. The boy’s name, Álfgrímur, is explained as a compound of Álf (elf) and grímur (a poetic word for night) meaning »he who spends the night with the elves«.

The story takes place in Iceland in the beginning of the twentieth century and deals with the orphaned boy Álfgrímur, his adoptive grandparents, and the small, tolerant community of misfits and eccentrics they gather around them at Brekkukot, their cottage on the outskirts of Reykjavík.
This is a high quality TV film in two episodes and one of the best and most important in Icelandic film history. It is based on the novel »Brekkukotsannáll« (»Annals of Brekkukot«) by the Nobel Prize Winner in Literature Halldór Laxness, published in 1957.

This is the tale of Álfgrímur, an abandoned child, whose mother gave birth to him in the turf-and-stone cottage of Bjorn of Brekkukot, the fisherman, on the outskirts of what is now Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. It is the history of his boyhood and youth, spent at Bjorn’s home in the early years of the twentieth century, a hospitable place where strangers were welcome and often stayed for years and where, in the mid-loft, Álfgrímur learned philosophy and much else besides. When Álfgrímur went to school he came into contact with a whole different world in which the reigning spirit was the singer, Gardar Holm, whose international renown was a source of pride to his fellow countrymen. But Álfgrímur’s encounters with the singer only served to make him and his fame more mysterious.
