Movie description:
A story about friendship between a boy and his turtle.
»Totor« is the name given by Mèntse, the film's boy-hero, to a tortoise that keeps growing fatter. »Totor« is the story of an orphan boy who meets his alcoholic father several times without ever speaking to him, and who is finally taken in by pygmies. In the pygmy village he makes friends with Ngâ’nsi, a young orphan like him who has extraordinary divining powers.
Ngâ’nsi runs away from the village. But Mèntse and Ngâ’nsi share the same destiny and eventually meet again. In the meantime Mèntse also leaves the pygmy village to retrace his past. He is finally taken in by a bad man named Isaac and his wife, a young woman who could very well be his mother. Mistreated by adults, alone in the world, Mèntse diverts all his affections to »Totor« the tortoise. But the tortoise is an animal venerated by some people and cursed by others ... or worse, the tortoise is very much sought after by disreputable merch.
A boy of ten named Mèntse escapes from a burning hut, pursued by a man who claims to be his father. Finding sanctuary from the inhospitable jungle, he becomes fast friends with Ngâ’nsi, a lovely girl who can see beyond the visible. Mèntse’s journey winds into ever more wondrous territory, in which he discovers a very unusual turtle (Totor) and a city where no city ought to be.
This delightful film is an African variation on themes from »Huckleberry Finn« and »Night of the Hunter«.
