Movie description:
A follow-up to »Children in the Wind«, »Four Seasons of Children« is also based on a Tsubota Joji novel. The film is divided into two chapters, following the young protagonists’ minor adventures and real-world awakenings over spring and summer, then autumn and winter.
Two young brothers grow up with a sick father and a ranch/dairy to run. Their family was disowned by their mother’s parents when she married against their will. Thus the boys believe they have no grandparents. They work and go to school and play with their friends. But life has surprises for them as an employee of their grandfather’s mill plots to re-possess their ranch.
The story is well told, the filmwork eloquent in its use of light and montage, the characters are well developed and the acting is good. This film is a fine example of the quality film making done in the 30s and 40s in Japan. Highly recommended.
