Constant Wegman, a 14 year old boy, raised by his grandmother in Zeedijk, Amsterdam. She is the owner of a cafe-bar »De Rode Laars« (The Red Boots). The dreaming Constant runs away from this world of drunkards, gamblers, fighters by writing poems. His grandmother wants him to take control of the cafe. Then Constant secretly subscribes to a national poem writing competition: a new Vondel is born!
Amsterdam, 1960s: Constant is a 14-year-old boy who helps out in his grandmother’s bar in a tough part of town. He tries to make the best of life even though his mother has recently been admitted to a lunatic asylum. When he falls in love with Muis, the new temporary worker in the pub, he discovers that he has a gift of poetry. His grandmother is not too happy about all that and forbids him to write, fearing he will end up like his mother. When Muis decides to move to Australia and his mother commits suicide, he writes one final poem which he submits to a contest ...

He is obsessed with a local prostitute, secretly keeps track of her tricks and the time they spend with her.
