Painless
Movie description:
Set in Catalonia, »Painless« weaves two stories: in one, starting during the Spanish Civil War and running through to the ’60s, an asylum attempts to rehabilitate children who feel no pain, by teaching them physical suffering. In the second, in the present time, a brilliant neurosurgeon who needs a bone marrow transplant, discovers this dark past when he searches for his biological parents.

In Catalonia, 1931, at the dawn of the Spanish Civil War, a group of children is torn from their mothers, straitjacketed and muzzled in a sanatorium, where doctors attempt to discover the source of their uncanny affliction: they are incapable of feeling pain. A German doctor is brought in to work with the children, forcing them to participate in a series of bizarre rehabilitation experiments that aim to »cure« them of their ailment by teaching them to understand suffering. Benigno, the deeply empathic and silent boy in Cell 17, responds differently to the treatments than his cohorts, but when war erupts and soldiers take over the sanatorium, the sessions are abruptly interrupted, and any hope of the boy’s salvation is lost.
In the present day, brilliant neurosurgeon David Martel is involved in a devastating car accident, from which he emerges miraculously unscathed – but when doctors examine him, they discover that he’s suffering from an advanced case of lymphoma. In search of a rare bone marrow donor, Martel finds himself caught in a spiral of lies, as even his own parents refuse to answer his questions about his lineage. Venturing ever further into the long-buried past, Martel unearths shameful secrets as he tries to uncover the mystery of his origins before it’s too late.
