The Hummingbird Tree
Movie description:
Set in 1946 in Trinidad, »The Hummingbird Tree« tells the story of the friendship between Alan, the 12-year-old son of well-off white parents, and Jaillin and Kaiser, two local East Indian children.

A story set in the lead up to independence in Trinidad in 1946. Alan, the son of a sugar plantation owner, unknowingly breaks all the rules by forming a relationship with Jaillin, the young housemaid, who is of Indian extraction. The relationship is doomed and ultimately Jaillin pays a terrible price as she is cast out by her own community for associating with a white boy.

Alan was too young to understand why his parents preferred him to play with the other white boys on the estate. But gradually, he learned that if he was going to meet Kaiser and Jaillin, he had to pretend he was going to meet someone else, he had to pretend he didn’t enjoy spending time with his friends, he had to pretend he didn’t mind when he wasn’t allowed to invite them to his party. Sometimes, horribly, the pretending became real, and Alan found himself in betrayal of the friendship that meant so much to him.
