Movie description:
On Christmas Eve in 1928, baker Jérôme Corbières’ wife Jeanne gives birth to a child, but it is dead. In desperation, after she gets to know that she never can bear a child anymore, she runs away. Jérôme adopts two boys from an orphanage to teach them »the art of making bread«. Years pass. A short affair with Elizabeth let him become father of a girl. His wife returns and she and the rest of the family let him get through many ups and downs.
Originally shown in three parts on French television, this film follows a baker and his wife living in a small town during the 1920’s and 30’s. During the first episode, the woman has a miscarriage and leaves her husband out of grief. In an attempt to get her back, the man adopts two boys, roughly nine and ten years of age.
Our heroine returns home in Part Two, resumes her role as wife and begins playing the one of mom too, but trouble starts when she learns her husband had an affair while she was absent; to get even, she sleeps with another man and quickly thereafter finds herself pregnant, the question now being whose child is soon to be born.
The final chapter jumps forward about eight or so years, focuses on one of the boys rebelling against his adopted father by involving himself with dad’s old lover and the impact World War II has on the family.
