Movie description:
Lucien owns a boxing school where he trains and counsels kids from poor and immigrant families, while his own son is quiet, sensitive and deeply troubled. They share a heartache that slowly builds to a surprising haemorrhage at an unforgettable birthday barbeque.
Two years ago Lucien’s wife and daughter were killed in a tragic car accident. Since that time he and his 15-year-old son Mitchel are unable to communicate with each other. While Lucien keeps himself busy with his kick boxing school for youths, Mitchel takes care of the household, but in the eyes of his father can’t do anything right. Their tense relationship reaches a climax when Mitchel shows up at his birthday party wearing his sister’s tutu, giving a performance for his guests. Furiously, Lucien decides to leave the house and sleep in his boxing school. While Mitchel is doing fine without his father around, Lucien seems to be heading to total self destruction.
Lucien runs a well-known boxing academy in the north of Amsterdam; training his young boxing pupils, and training them hard, is his sole purpose in life. A car crash two years prior, in which his wife and his daughter died, has hardened him. He suppresses his grief; empathy and compassion are not his strong points. Mitchel, Lucien’s 15-year-old son, who is much calmer than his father, is able to show his grief, but feels left alone, as he cannot share it with Lucien. On a birthday celebration Mitchel confronts his father. The situation gets out of hand, Mitchel turns away from his father, who eventually needs to rely on his son and slowly begins to gain an understanding of the people around him and of his son, whom he has unjustly condemned.
